Repair vs. Replace
When considering whether to repair or replace your existing furnace and/or air conditioner there are many factors to take into consideration. Three of the most important factors are the age of the system, cost to repair the system and cost to operate the system.
Life Expectancy
The average life expectancy of a furnace or air conditioner ranges between 12 and 15 years and can vary depending on how the system was maintained. The older a system gets, the less efficiently it operates, costing you more on your utility bills.
Analyze Your Costs
If your system is more than 10 years old and your energy costs are on the rise, use the chart to the right to determine whether to repair your existing system or replace it with a newer more efficient model. For example, if your existing air conditioner is 12 years old and the cost to repair it is more than $600, it is likely time to consider replacement.
