6 Key Warning Signs That Your AC is Failing

This latest heat wave has seemingly snapped people into summer mode. HVAC technicians everywhere are busy keeping up with maintenance and repair calls. There’s nothing like a 90 degree day to remind us how important a functioning AC unit is! If your unit is perpetually on the fritz, how do we know whether we should push it for time or invest in a new one? We, at Luxury Heating and Cooling, have put together this short list to help you make your decision.

Your Unit Uses R-22 Freon

This is a no brainer. R-22 Freon was phased out last year due to environmental issues. Now to prevent further use the prices for the refrigerant have been hiked up significantly. An HVAC technician spends $800+ a gallon now versus less than $200. Every repair will cost more and you will have to replace it eventually anyway as the plan is to completely phase out R22.

Your Unit is 10+ Years Old

Typically AC units last 10-12 years, very best case is 15 years if you take excellent care of it. So, if your unit is over that 10 year mark and is routinely needing expensive repairs we recommend investing your money into a newer unit that will save you money in the long term. Also, bonus: with the newer systems the recent technology advancements in energy efficiency will see your utility bills go down as well.

Your Unit Has Become Inefficient

An AC unit’s energy efficiency is measured in a SEER rating. A SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating is liken to the miles per gallon rating of your car. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient it is. All new units have a rating of at least 14 and can go as high as 21. If your unit is 13 or below, you should consider a replacement.

Your Unit Breaks Down Frequently

A unit that is always breaking down is heavy on the wallet and the mind. With summer coming up you need a system you can rely on. Repair costs add up, not to mention the possibility of it breaking down on a 90 degree day is too big of a risk. Replace the unit to save yourself the headache, and the money in the long run.

You Are Facing Expensive Repairs

This is much like our last point, but it is important to state: anytime you are facing expensive repairs it is important to weigh the cost of the repair against the cost of a new unit. Not to mention the cost of future repairs if you do not replace the old one. Chances are the cost of the repair might cover a large part of a new system, especially if you checked “yes” to the other points on this list.

Your Unit is The Wrong Size

While the system might not be failing in the literal sense, it is failing your home if it is not big enough to pump the cool air to all corners of it. Again, unless you ticked off multiple points on this list, this fix might not require a whole new unit. You might get by with just getting a stronger motor, or even a booster to help the circulation of air. Talk with a specialist to see what they can do to help keep that cool air moving.

What it comes down to is your comfort. If your comfort is compromised and your AC unit checks off too many points on our list, is not up to the task of keeping you cool and needs to be replaced. If you have more questions about whether you should keep your unit or get a new one, our technicians at Luxury Heating & Cooling would be more than happy to help you out. Don’t wait until the temperatures reach the 90s again, prepare for “summer mode” by calling a specialist today.
